It’s week 17 of Cassie’s Challenges and this week’s challenge is to go outside for 15 minutes every day. Did you know that spending just a few minutes outdoors can have numerous health benefits? Read on to find out more!
Who gave meditation a try for last week’s challenge? I really dragged my feet! It wasn’t until the end of the week that I finally gave it a red hot go! I tried the Headspace app and I did really enjoy it. I found the whole process very calming and being an app it was easy enough to do whenever the mood struck me (and wherever I was!). We’ve also been doing a beginner’s yoga course over the past few Saturday’s and part of this week’s class was a guided meditation – good timing! I can’t pretend that I would fit in meditation into my day every day BUT it is something I want to do on days when I’m feeling particularly stressed and anxious. Did anyone else give an app a go? How did you find it?
This week’s challenge might just have even more benefits than meditation!…
Go outside for 15 minutes every day
A few weeks ago, I laid down a reading challenge to get us away from our screens. In that post, I quoted a study that has shown the average person watches 3-5 hours of television a day. Another study showed that people are spending on average nearly two hours on social media a day. I’m going to hazard a guess that between social media time and TV time we aren’t spending a whole lot of time outdoors!
It’s a shame really, because heading outdoors can provide us with multiple physical and mental health benefits! In 2014, Business Insider Australia outlined that spending some time outside can harness these scientifically proven benefits:
- Improved short-term memory
- Restored mental energy
- Stress relief
- Reduce inflammation
- Better vision
- Improved concentration
- Sharper thinking and creativity
- Possible anti-cancer effects
- Immune system boost
- Improved mental health
- Reduced risk of early health
We are currently suffering through winter here in the Southern Hemisphere and this usually means hiding indoors until the warmer months. Even though the days heat up here in Brisbane, I am guilty of hiding away and spending all day in the office. But getting outside is a wonderful way to recharge your batteries. So, this week I am going to try to spend at least 15 minutes outdoors, every day!
For those of you in the Northern Hemisphere, if you aren’t already doing 15 minutes outside and more – you aren’t doing summer right! And you definitely need to take this challenge! So to kick us off, here are a few ways to spend more time outside!
5 ways to spend more time outdoors:
- Drink your morning coffee or tea in the sun
- Eat meals outdoors or even have a picnic
- Take the kids to the park
- Go for a walk
- Take your work breaks outside (even if this means checking FB on your phone outside!)
What do you do to get more time outdoors?
As always, I’ll be tracking my progress for this week’s challenge on Instagram if you want to follow along. I’d also love to see how you are spending your time outdoors (although if you are showing off how good summer is being too you I might cry!). Tag me in your pictures under the hashtag #beforeverhealthier.
