It’s week 16 of Cassie’s Challenges and this week’s challenge is to try meditation! It can be a class, an app or a guided meditation on YouTube – just give it a go!
What did everyone cook up for last week’s breakfast challenge? I made up my baba ganoush, mushrooms, potatoes and spinach recipe on Tuesday and it was very tasty. I also whipped up a batch of my banana maple steel cut oats with almond milk instead of my regular cow’s milk and I am happy to report it still tasted delicious! I also made a batch of banana pikelets on Saturday and they sure hit the spot!
It’s now been a week since I quit dairy and I thought the weekend would be the hardest but honestly it has been smooth sailing so far. I certainly miss cheese the most but milk wise it has been easy to find a close enough substitute! Onwards and upwards.
Now for this week’s challenge…
Week 16 – Try meditation
Meditation is something that has always had my curiosity and yet I’ve never really gotten into it! Part of it might be the fact that I’ve always associated it with some hippie mambo jumbo! But meditation is no longer just for cults or those who visit Ashram’s in India. Nope, meditation is taking the world by storm and research suggests that just a few minutes a day can make a huge difference in our lives!
8 benefits of meditation:
- Reduces stress and anxiety
- Encourages a healthy lifestyle
- Improves concentration
- Increases happiness
- Slows ageing
- Lowers blood pressure
- Improves immunity
- Increases self-awareness
These benefits are certainly appealing! We all want to live longer, feel less stress and be happy. So why not dedicate a few minutes a day to try the practice of meditation? There really is no hard and fast rule for how long you should meditate for. Some people swear by 20 minutes in the morning and evening. But others feel the benefits just from 5 minutes they can fit in anywhere. This week’s challenge isn’t about fulfilling a certain amount of time. It’s about giving meditation a go! If you want to set yourself a goal of 20 minutes every day – go for it! If getting just one meditation in all week feels more realistic – do it!
My goal is to set aside 10 minutes every day to meditate. I have recently downloaded the Headspace app and I’m going to try out their basics meditation course, which is one 10-minute guided meditation every day.
Unsure how to start? Here’s 3 different ways you can try meditation:
- Download a meditation app like Calm or Headspace and start a free trial
- Attend a meditation class
- YouTube a guided meditation
Now I want to hear from you!
Have you tried meditation before?
Have you got a favourite meditation app to recommend?
