Hands up if you’ve seen a post on Facebook or Instagram that has made you feel jealous? As much as I hate to admit it, I am not immune to social media jealousy. I’ll be scrolling through a feed and see someone who’s living the high life on an overseas vacation, or a picture of a woman I wish I looked like, and suddenly, I’m filled with bad thoughts.
Since starting my blog, I notice the green-eyed monster rear its head a little more. I’m sure other bloggers will agree it is hard at times not to see other’s success in some form and be envious. Whilst a little envy may be harmless, jealous feelings can fester in your mind and hinder your personal progress.
Lately I’ve been making myself more aware of what causes my negative feelings on social media and taking steps to rid myself of them. Below are 6 simple yet effective ways I’ve found to turn social media jealousy around.
1. Reality Check
Most of us post when something good is happening or when we think we have something worthy of sharing. Take a look at your own feed – how many candid posts have you got sharing with the world your worst moments? It’s highly unlikely you have any. Facebook and other social media platforms are not a catalogue of someone’s life and you never know what is going on in someone else’s world. Take appearances with a grain of salt.
2. Practice Gratitude
Being grateful for what we have can immediately improve our state of mind. Spend some time listing in your mind or on paper all the things you are grateful for – big or small. Any jealous feelings will long be forgotten as you focus on the positives in your own life.
3. Delete, Delete, Delete
Are you following a friend or a public figure who gives you consistent gross feelings? Maybe it’s someone who you’ve had problems with and seeing their name pop up makes you unhappy. Or a blogger who’s posts on similar topics to yours seem to get 1,000,000 likes while yours gets 6. Unfollow them. Right now. Stop hate following people and get on with your life. There are much better ways to use your time.
Note – If you feel like deleting a friend is giving you too much anxiety, you can always block them from your newsfeed on Facebook. This means you’ll only see their posts if you actually visit their page. Win Win.
4. Follow people who inspire you
There are so many amazing people out there who are creating pages full of positive vibes and great advice on all different types of niches. Whether it is a celebrity, blogger or business, go on a hunt to follow those who’s posts will fill you will good thoughts.
5. Limit your time on social media
Technology has been a blessing and a curse. Having quick access to social media apps on your phone means that you can easily fill any quiet minutes in your day scrolling through feeds. But should you? Absolutely not. Designate the times of day you will go on social media and don’t deviate. Feeling bored? Why not message or call a family member or friend? Real contact seems to be a commodity these days. You could also read a book or articles of interest. Fill your mind with something worthwhile.
Note – If you are really struggling to keep off your socials, there are apps you can download that lock your social media apps for a designated period of time! Cool idea and well worth looking in to.
6. Designate a social media free day
I generally try to keep Sunday’s as a social media free day. Yes, that means staying off all forms of social media all day. Does the whole world collapse? No. Taking a day off every now and then is great for your mental health. Take a day to focus on you and the things you love. Go outside. Take a drive. Everyone will still be there tomorrow.
