It’s the 14th week of Cassie’s Challenges and this week’s challenge is to stretch for 10 minutes every day. Which I never do. Because I’m hopeless… But this week – this week I’m stretching!
Who completed last week’s reading challenge? I enjoyed it so much I wish I made it a two-week challenge so I could ace it again this week! But even though I have set yet another challenge for this week, I will be keeping a regular reading routine in my day! Last week I managed to finish The Stranger Beside Me by Ann Rule which I found truly riveting. I also started reading Option B by Sheryl Sandberg. Has anyone else read either of these books? I’m loving them so much but no one I know has!! Now tell me – what were your reading last week and how did you find the challenge? Inspired to keep reading? I sure hope so!
This week’s challenge is around fitness:
Stretch for 10 minutes every day
I’ll tell you right now that I NEVER stretch. I don’t stretch before gym. I don’t get up from my desk and regularly stretch during the day. And I don’t do the stretches I’m given when I hurt my neck / shoulders from not getting up from said desk and stretching during the day! I’m hopeless! BUT I’ve decided the time has come to change that.
There’s really no hard and fast rule about how much you should be stretching every day, so the goal set at 10 minutes is just to get a starting point. Ideally if you are working in an office or at a desk you should be getting up at least every hour and moving around. It’s also recommended that you stretch before every workout (but as I already pointed out, this is not my strong suit!). If you put all that together you’ll probably smash 10 minutes a day and even do more.
For times when we aren’t working out or working at a desk, daily stretching can still have a big impact on improving our overall health. Here’s just some of the other health benefits that can be achieved from regular stretching.
8 health benefits of stretching:
- Decreases risk of injury
- Improves alertness and concentration levels
- Promotes blood circulation
- Improves athletic performance and stamina
- Minimises soreness
- Increases flexibility
- Relieves stress
- Improves sleep
But I’d have to say the best part about stretching is – ANYONE can do it at ANY time. Yep, that’s right. You don’t need a gym membership. Or special equipment. You can do stretches at your desk, in your chair, on the ground or with a wall. You can fit in a stretch first thing in the morning or at night while watching some TV to unwind. The options are endless.
Now if you are new to stretching and not sure how to get started with building a stretching routine, a simple Google or YouTube search should be able to point you in the right direction. I’ve done just that and found a few helpful articles if you want to check them out:
